FABTECH 2026 in Las Vegas: what it means for job shops

FABTECH 2026 ran October 21 to 23 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. What the show put in front of job shops (welding cobots, AI on the shop floor, reshoring and cost pressure) and what a small machine shop or fabricator can take from it.

FABTECH 2026 ran October 21 to 23 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the first FABTECH in Las Vegas since 2016. The organizers expected more than 31,000 attendees and more than 1,400 exhibitors on over 700,000 square feet (organizer's press release, published before the show). The show is run by five partners: the American Welding Society, the Chemical Coaters Association International, FMA, the Precision Metalforming Association and SME (Fabricating & Metalworking).

We were there. This page sums up what the show put in front of job shops and what we think a small machine shop or fabricator can take from it. Everything below links its source; vendor claims are labelled as such.

Three themes the show was built around

The organizer framed the 2026 show around three investment decisions (press release):

  1. Automation, robotics and AI: robotic and collaborative welding, and a new AI for Manufacturing pavilion.
  2. Precision and capacity: aerospace and defense demand and data-center construction in the western US, with equipment such as CNC tube benders and fiber lasers.
  3. Reshoring and domestic manufacturing: tariffs and supply-chain pressure pushing sourcing closer to home, with the Forming and Fabricating and the Job Shop pavilions aimed at smaller shops.

The same release quotes the pressures behind those decisions, citing third parties: the welding industry is short about 400,000 workers (American Welding Society), raw-material costs for major sectors are up 7% year over year (Bureau of Labor Statistics), and metal prices are up 20% since the start of the year (World Bank Group). For what that means for a quote, see our guide to metal prices and tariffs in job shop quotes.

Welding cobots for the jobs that were hard to automate

The clearest shift for small shops: collaborative welding robots are now shown on work that used to stay manual. FANUC's announced demos (FANUC press release, vendor claims) included:

  • a portable 11 kg cobot (CRX-3iA) on a magnetic base for vertical-up welding on structural steel;
  • weld programs created by scanning the part instead of teaching every point;
  • a plasma cutting cell set up without extensive robot programming;
  • a collaborative paint robot with scan-to-path programming for high-mix work;
  • an AI kitting demo that reads handwritten work orders.

Universal Robots showed cobot cells with integrators Vectis Automation and Hirebotics (press release).

What it means for a job shop. A cobot no longer needs a long run of identical parts to pay off: the pitch is short setups on high-mix work. Before buying, price it the way you price a job: hours a week the cell will actually weld, the parts you would move to it, and who programs it. Our guide to machine shop hourly rates shows how a new machine changes the rate you quote.

AI arrived on the floor, and in quoting

AI got its own pavilion this year. For job shops the practical part is not the robots but the office: reading drawings and models, filling in quotes, reading paperwork. Quoting software was on the show list too: Paperless Parts previewed AI that turns technical files into quoting data (Canadian Metalworking preview, vendor claims).

What it means for a job shop. Quoting speed is now part of how buyers choose a shop. A shop that answers in a day wins work that a better shop answers in a week. Whatever tool you use, the work is the same: know your rates, your setup times and your material costs, and keep them current. See automatic quoting for job shops for what can and cannot be automated today.

Reshoring is real, but buyers have to find you

The reshoring theme came with its own pavilion for job shops. For a shop, reshoring means buyers looking for suppliers they have never worked with, and the bottleneck is being found. Most shop websites do not state what the shop makes: in our study of 3,768 US job shop websites, only 1 in 4 states a material, a machine and a certification.

What it means for a job shop. Put the facts a buyer filters on where they can be read: processes, materials, machines with their envelopes, tolerances you hold, certifications, quantities you run and lead time. Then make sure you are listed where buyers and AI assistants search. For buyers weighing a move back from overseas, our landed cost guide is the one to send them.

Questions people ask

When and where was FABTECH 2026?
October 21 to 23, 2026, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It was the first FABTECH in Las Vegas since 2016. The next show in Las Vegas is not announced on this page; check fabtechexpo.com for future dates.
How big was FABTECH 2026?
Before the show the organizers expected more than 31,000 attendees and more than 1,400 exhibitors on over 700,000 square feet in 40 product categories.
Who organizes FABTECH?
Five partners: the American Welding Society (AWS), the Chemical Coaters Association International (CCAI), the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association (FMA), the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) and SME.
What were the main themes at FABTECH 2026?
Automation (robotic and collaborative welding, cutting and finishing), AI tools for manufacturing (the show added an AI for Manufacturing pavilion), and reshoring under tariff and cost pressure, with a Job Shop pavilion aimed at smaller shops.
Is it worth going to FABTECH as a small job shop?
Yes, if you go with a list: the machines or software you are pricing, the questions you need answered, and the suppliers you want to compare side by side. The exhibit hall pass was free. Walking the show without a list mostly produces brochures.
